CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test)
Roadmap to become a government school teacher through CTET
CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) is the mandatory qualification for teaching in central government schools — Kendriya Vidyalaya (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya (NVS), DSSSB schools, and Army schools. It has two papers: Paper 1 (Class 1-5 teachers) and Paper 2 (Class 6-8 teachers). With a government teacher salary of ₹35,000–₹80,000/month (7th Pay Commission), 2 months summer vacation, job security, and pension — teaching is one of the most family-friendly government careers. CTET is conducted twice a year by NTA.
CTET is an eligibility test, not a recruitment exam. Passing CTET makes you eligible to apply for teaching positions in central government schools. Actual recruitment is done separately by KVS, NVS, DSSSB, and other bodies. CTET certificate is valid for lifetime (changed from 7 years in 2021).
Who can apply: For Paper 1 (Primary): D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) or B.Ed with 50% in graduation. For Paper 2 (Upper Primary): B.Ed or equivalent with 50% in graduation/post-graduation in the relevant subject. Age: No upper age limit.
Why teaching is a great career: ₹35K-80K/month salary, 2 months summer vacation + winter break, no transfers (KVS has transfers but within the same city preference), pension (NPS), medical insurance, children's education allowance, and the satisfaction of shaping young minds.
After CTET: Apply for KVS (TGT/PGT/PRT), NVS (TGT/PGT), DSSSB (Delhi schools), Army Public Schools, and state government schools. Each has its own recruitment cycle — CTET is just the first step.
