Academic marks are just one part of your child's growth. This guide covers the skills and habits that schools don't teach but life demands.
Building a Reading Habit
Age-wise Reading Plan
| Age | What to Read | Daily Time |
|---|---|---|
| 3-5 years | Picture books, rhyme books (read aloud together) | 15 min |
| 5-8 years | Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Geronimo Stilton | 20 min |
| 8-12 years | Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid | 30 min |
| 12-15 years | Newspapers, non-fiction, classic novels | 30-45 min |
| 15+ years | Sapiens, Atomic Habits, domain-specific books | 30-60 min |
Tip: Let children choose their own books. A child who reads comics is still reading. Don't force "serious" books too early.
Sports & Physical Activity
- Age 3-6: Free play — running, jumping, climbing, swimming. No structured sports yet.
- Age 6-10: Try multiple sports — cricket, badminton, football, martial arts. Find what they enjoy.
- Age 10-14: Pick 1-2 sports seriously. Regular coaching. District/state level competitions.
- Age 14+: Sports scholarships, fitness habits for life. Even if not competitive, daily exercise is essential.
Why it matters: Sports build discipline, teamwork, resilience, and health. Colleges and companies value sports achievements.
Creativity & Arts
- Drawing & Painting: Don't correct their art. Let them express freely. Provide materials, not instructions.
- Music: Start with singing/rhymes. Introduce an instrument by age 7-8. Keyboard, guitar, or tabla are great starters.
- Dance: Classical or contemporary — builds confidence, fitness, and stage presence.
- Writing: Encourage journaling from Class 3. Story writing competitions. Start a blog by Class 7-8.
Financial Literacy for Kids
| Age | What to Teach | How |
|---|---|---|
| 5-8 | Money has value, saving vs spending | Piggy bank, play shop at home |
| 8-12 | Budgeting, needs vs wants, pocket money | Weekly pocket money with spending rules |
| 12-15 | Compound interest, banking basics, UPI | Open a junior savings account, Zerodha Varsity Module 1 |
| 15+ | Investing basics, stocks, mutual funds | Paper trading, Zerodha Varsity full course (free) |
Screen Time Guidelines
| Age | Max Screen Time | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3 | Zero (except video calls) | No screens. Play, talk, read instead. |
| 3-6 | 30 min/day | Educational only (Khan Academy Kids). Watch together. |
| 6-10 | 1 hour/day | Educational + limited entertainment. No social media. |
| 10-14 | 1.5 hours/day | No phone during study. No social media before 13. |
| 14+ | 2 hours/day (non-study) | Clear rules. Phone not in bedroom at night. |
Typing Skills
- When to start: Class 4-5 (age 9-10)
- Goal: 30 WPM by Class 8, 40+ WPM by Class 10
- Free tools: TypingClub.com, Typing.com, Keybr.com — 15 min daily practice
- Why it matters: Required for SSC, Railway, Court exams. Essential for coding, content creation, and every office job.
The Most Important Thing
Your relationship with your child matters more than any skill or mark. A child who feels loved, supported, and safe will naturally develop the confidence to learn anything. Be their cheerleader, not their critic.
